Simply ask them, "Who won the war?" I'm genuinely curious as to what their responses would have been. I have a sense they would have been rather(Upper Canadians) surprised to hear someone say that they did! Perhaps a different scene in Lower Canada though.
Aside from those who began to spin the militia myth and construct Loyalist narratives, who in Upper Canada really believed they had experienced victory? My own research has not examined post-war perceptions of the war.
In a war that saw so much "disaffection" and dissent, perhaps the victors were those who opposed the war in the first place!?
I just started reading Warrior Nation. Where do we put the plaques? One suggestion was that we try to get the plaques put in prominent places, such as the National park at Queenston Heights. We also talked about juxtaposition to other war memorials. Besides the obvious difficulties of getting such a prominent location approved, our committee was divided on the wisdom of coming "head to head" or "plaque to plaque" as the case may be with veteran's groups. We don't want to dishonour those who fought for what they believed in, but rather we want to remember those who believed in another way to achieve peace.Carol Pennerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14351475865066363574noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2319105741386073968.post-52932607448183302362012-05-14T20:06:18.095-04:002012-05-14T20:06:18.095-04:00In light of the fact that May 15 is International ...In light of the fact that May 15 is International Conscientious Objector
Day, I encourage you to spread the news about the below initiative:

The Canadian War Resisters Support Campaign (WRSC) is urging all to address the
issue of Operational Bulletin 202, and how it affects US Iraq war resisters
who come to Canada. Elijah thought he was left all alone in his witness, but God told him that there were 7,000 unseen others.

In WWII, thousands of CO’s served as medics and chaplains. No doubt we may encounter some voices contrary to this, but I think this bicentennial occasion really is a chance for us to self-examine and to reflect that internal discussion for others to know what makes us tick! I think it's a discussion that is necessary for us to have internally, and what better occasion than a massive-scale, heavily funded commemoration programme over 3 years that asks us to confront the facts of our heritage and then to assess that from today's standpoint.Joseph Levtof-Sentristhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10631679736646657894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2319105741386073968.post-2131707013516656892012-01-23T19:39:30.383-05:002012-01-23T19:39:30.383-05:00Greetings "War Resistance in 1812":

There’s a very interesting website on this closely related issue called...

Remembrance Day For All....

....including ALL OF those who want peace, as we remember Canada's wars.

The link to that site is RemembranceDayForAll ....DOT CA

Sincerely,
Boyd Reimer (grandson of John C.
